Shoulder arthritis
Revision Arthroplasty
Revision shoulder arthroplasty is performed when a previous implant fails due to infection, loosening, instability, fracture, or wear. It is technically demanding due to bone loss, scarring, and distorted anatomy. Preoperative planning with CT scans and infection workup is essential. Options include revising to a new total shoulder prosthesis or converting to reverse arthroplasty, depending on cuff status and bone stock. Outcomes can be satisfactory with experienced surgical technique and appropriate rehabilitation, but risks such as complications, stiffness, and lower functional gain are higher compared to primary procedures.
